“The Stage Club is committed to produce a variety of quality English Language theatre at affordable prices and to maintain a social setting for members who have an interest in theatre.”
Founded in 1945, The Stage Club is Singapore’s oldest theatre company. It is a non-profit community theatre, is open to all and can provide rewarding experiences on-stage, off-stage, pre-production, post-production and just plain social. For the past seventy years, it has presented an average of five productions a year, covering the best of theatre in the English language. Recent productions have been staged at the Alliance Francaise and the KC Arts Centre. Our repertoire includes comedy, farce, melodrama, thrillers, musicals, classic plays – both historical and modern – and, of course, straight drama. As part of our commitment to the community, we regularly stage O and A level set texts. Recent examples have been Twelfth Night, The Caretaker, The Rivals and Hedda Gabler.
The Clubhouse featured here is at 41 Malcolm Road, an attractive “black and white” house where, for fourty years, we maintained our wardrobe, props and sets and where we had ample rehearsal space. The Club first occupied these premises in September 1965, having been found for us through the good offices of the then cultural authorities. The Clubhouse was officially opened by the first President of the Republic of Singapore, H.E. Encik Yusof Bin Ishak.
Membership of the Club is approximately 150, drawn both from the ever-changing expatriate population and from Singaporeans. Members come from all walks of life – commerce, industry, the professions, students and homemakers.
In 2005 we moved into 24 Whitchurch Road. The Clubhouse is used for rehearsals, set-building, painting, costume creation, props collecting, meetings and all the other activities associated with producing the next show and with running the Club. We aim to provide an atmosphere of fun for all, no matter what their interests are in the Club. In 2013 we moved again and are now located in a very functional facility at 203 Henderson Road, #07-01, 159546.
