“The Stage Club has captured the heart of this Shakespearean comedy and served it up in an excellent good manner. What the performance lacked in terms of romantic lyricism, it made up for in pure dramatic canniness. The decadence of upper-crust Illyria resonated with the retro post-war set, and a 1940s jazz score nicely brought the play into the 20th century. The enthusiasm of the tightly knit cast was contagious, although the adoring Shakespeare fans in the audience barely needed any encouragement.”
Inkpot e-zine review
Please join us for Stage Club’s sparkling 1940′s production of Twelfth Night directed by Daniel Toyne. This is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies and opens Stage Club’s Diamond Jubilee season. The double plot – of infatuation and identity, confusion and deceit, deflated ego and love at first sight – brings us several of Shakespeare’s most well-known characters – the pompous steward Malvolio, the permanently tipsy Sir Toby Belch and the love-sick Duke Orsino, among others.
The international cast includes Musa Fazal and Phil McConnell (The Caretaker), Paul Hannon (Whose life is it anyway?), Kim Maxwell, Angela Barolsky and Barry Woolhead (Rumours), Maureen McConnell (The Lion in Winter) and Elena Scherer (Taking Sides).
Come along this April and discover if it really is true that “music be the food of love”.
